How to make a cushion for a chair

How to make a cushion for a chair

When you’re sitting in your favorite chair at home, it’s nice to know that it will be there when you return from work. But what happens if that chair is no longer comfortable? Or what if the chair is starting to look worn and faded?

You will likely want to invest in new, comfortable, well-designed chairs, which will cost you a pretty penny. But what if I tell you that you can change everything uncomfortable with your chair by just changing your cushion?

That’s right! Your cushion can do everything for your chair. Your cushion can give your chair a fresh look and make it comfortable to sit on. Your cushion can make your chair look newer. You can replace your worn-out cushion with a new one. You can buy cushions that will cost you money or create your own cushions.

Creating your own cushion may seem like an undertaking, but it is straightforward. You can make your own cushion out of fabric you may have lying around the house, and we will show you how to do it. So, let’s not waste time and start creating a simple DIY chair Cushion.

How To Make A Cushion For A Chair

There are many ways to make a cushion. You can make it using cotton, polyester, and other materials. You have to use suitable quality fabrics. I will show three ways to make a cushion. One uses ties and a zipper, and another uses Velcro strips. Continue reading.

How To Make Chair Cushions With Ties

To start this process, you will need to collect these things:

Materials

Gather these components:

  • Fabric for the cushion cover
  • Batting or foam for the cushion filling
  • Thread to match the fabric
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • A sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Ties (either pre-made or fabric cut into strips)

Steps

Since you have gathered everything needed now, let’s proceed with the steps:

  1. Measure the seat of your chair to determine the size of the cushion. Add an inch or two to the length and width measurements to allow seam allowances.
  2. Cut two pieces of fabric to the size determined in step 1. These will be the front and back of the cushion cover.
  3. Cut two pieces of batting or foam to the same size as the fabric pieces.
  4. Place one piece of fabric right-side up on a flat surface. Place one piece of batting or foam on top of the fabric. Place the other piece of fabric right-side down on top of the batting or foam.
  5. Pin the three layers together around the edges, leaving a gap of about 4 inches on one side for turning the cushion right-side out.
  6. Sew around the cushion’s edges using a sewing machine or needle and thread. Make sure to sew close to the edge of the batting or foam.
  7. Turn the cushion right-side out through the gap left in step 5.
  8. Fold in the edges of the gap and pin it closed.
  9. Cut fabric strips for the ties and sew the ties to the corners of the cushion.
  10. Insert the cushion into the cover and tie the ties to secure the cushion to the chair.

Congrats, now you know how to make a chair cushion with ties, but if you are not satisfied with the technique, you can use the other method I mentioned below.

How to Make Chair Cushions Using the zipper

Again you have to collect the materials needed:

Materials:

  • Fabric for the cushion cover
  • Filling for the cushion such as foam, batting, or fiberfill
  • A zipper that is the same length as the edge of the cushion cover
  • Thread to match the fabric
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • A sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • A zipper foot attachment for your sewing machine (optional but recommended)

It is important to note that if you use foam as the filling, you will need a foam cutter or a sharp knife to cut the foam to the size you need. Also, make sure to get a zipper the same length as the edge of the cushion cover; that way, it will be easier to install and use.

Steps:

  1. Measure the seat of your chair to determine the size of the cushion. Add an inch or two to the length and width measurements to allow seam allowances.
  2. Cut two pieces of fabric to the size determined in step 1. These will be the front and back of the cushion cover.
  3. Cut a piece of foam, batting, or fiberfill to the same size as the fabric pieces.
  4. Place one piece of fabric right-side up on a flat surface. Place the filling on top of the fabric. Place the other piece of fabric right-side down on top of the filling.
  5. Pin the three layers together around the edges, leaving a gap of about 4 inches on one side for turning the cushion right-side out.
  6. Sew around three cushion edges using a sewing machine or needle and thread. Make sure to sew close to the edge of the foam.
  7. Install the zipper by sewing it to the remaining edge of the cushion. Make sure the zipper is facing the right side of the fabric. Using a zipper foot attachment for your sewing machine is recommended, which will help you sew closer to the zipper teeth.
  8. Turn the cushion right-side out through the zipper.
  9. Insert the cushion into the cover and zip it closed.
  10. Attach the cushion to the chair by tying the ties around the chair’s frame or using another method such as Velcro, elastic, adhesive, or magnetic tape.

As you can see, this method is almost the same as before, and all other methods follow the same path with some exceptions. But I promised I would show you three methods of creating chair cushions. So, I will explain the last one too. Here we go.

How to Make Chair Cushions Using the Velcro

Materials

  • Fabric for the cushion cover
  • Filling for the cushion such as foam, batting, or fiberfill
  • Velcro strips
  • Thread to match the fabric
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • A sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Measuring tape or ruler

Steps:

  1. Measure the size of the chair seat to determine the dimensions of the cushion. Add a few inches to the measurements for seam allowances.
  2. Cut two pieces of fabric to the measurements obtained in step 1. These will be the front and back of the cushion cover.
  3. Cut a piece of foam, batting, or fiberfill to the same size as the fabric pieces.
  4. Place one piece of fabric on a flat surface, with the right side facing up. Place the filling on top of the fabric. Then, put the second piece of fabric on top of the filling, with the right side facing down.
  5. Pin the layers together around the edges.
  6. Sew around three cushion edges using a sewing machine or needle and thread. Make sure to sew close to the edge of the foam.
  7. Cut two Velcro strips; one should be the same length as the edge of the cushion cover, and the other should be half that length.
  8. Attach the longer Velcro strip on the chair frame, where the cushion will sit. Attach the shorter Velcro strip on the back of the cushion cover, aligning it with the longer Velcro strip on the chair frame.
  9. Sew the Velcro strips in place, securing them to the fabric.
  10. Insert the cushion into the cover and press the Velcro strips together to attach the cushion to the chair.

This method is an easy and efficient way to attach the cushion to the chair; it doesn’t require ties or other attachments. The Velcro strips will hold the cushion in place, and you can easily remove the cushion to clean or change the cover.

Which Method Is Ideal For You?

The easiest method for making chair cushions will depend on your personal skill level and the tools and materials you have on hand. However, some methods may be easier than others.

For example, making chair cushions with ties is a relatively simple method that doesn’t require special tools or skills. All you need is fabric, thread, and ties (or strips of fabric) to make the cushions.

Making chair cushions using Velcro is also easy; it doesn’t require sewing skills; you only need to attach the Velcro to the cushion cover and to the chair frame.

Adhesive or magnetic tape is another easy method; it doesn’t require sewing or cutting; you only need to attach the tape to the cushion cover and to the chair frame.

On the other hand, methods like making chair cushions with zippers or using elastic may require more skills and experience.

Overall, choosing a method, you feel comfortable with that meets your needs is essential.

Conclusion

In conclusion, making chair cushions is a fun and rewarding project that can add comfort and style to your home decor. Whether you make essential cushions with ties, or more advanced options like zippers or Velcro, the possibilities are endless. With suitable materials, tools, and creativity, you can create custom cushions to make your chairs more inviting and comfortable. Feel free to experiment with different fabrics, patterns, and filling materials to create a unique look that reflects your personal style. And remember to clean and maintain your cushions regularly to ensure they last a long time. Happy cushion-making!

FAQs

Q: How do I clean and maintain my chair cushions?

Answer: The best way to clean and maintain your chair cushions depends on the fabric and filling you use. For general cleaning, you can use a vacuum or lint roller to remove dust and debris. Use mild detergent and water for spot cleaning, and test the solution in an inconspicuous area before cleaning the entire cushion. If the cushion cover can be removed, it can be washed in the machine according to the care instruction of the fabric.

Q: How do I make custom-shaped chair cushions?

Answer: To make custom-shaped chair cushions, you will need to take precise measurements of the chair seat and then create a pattern using those measurements. Once you have a pattern, you can cut your fabric, filling, and any attachments (such as ties or Velcro) to the appropriate size and shape. Then, you can sew the cushion cover and attach the filling and attachments.

Q: What types of fabric are best for chair cushions?

Answer: The best fabric for chair cushions depends on your personal preference and the use of the chair. For example, cotton or linen fabrics are great for indoor cushions because they’re soft and breathable. In contrast, outdoor cushions may require a more durable and weather-resistant fabric such as Sunbrella or Polyester.

Q: Can I use a different type of filling foam, batting, or fiberfill besides?

Answer: Yes, you can use other fillings, such as down, feathers, or synthetic, but be aware that they may require more maintenance and care than foam, batting, or fiberfill.

Q: How much filling do I need for my chair cushion?

Answer: The amount of filling you need will depend on the size of your cushion and the filling you are using. A general rule of thumb is to use enough filling to make the cushion firm but not too hard. You can always add or remove filling as needed.

Q: Can I use a glue gun instead of sewing?

Answer: While using a glue gun to make chair cushions is possible, it may not be the best method. A glue gun can make the cushion less durable and secure. It’s recommended to sew the cushion cover and the attachments for more strength and longevity.

Q: How do I make a cushion with built-in lumbar support?

Answer: To make a cushion with built-in lumbar support, insert a lumbar roll or a small pillow into the cushion cover before you fill it with foam, batting, or fiberfill. You can also make a separate lumbar cushion to place on top of the seat cushion for added support.
